The Country Life
D. McColl March 2005
Verse 1: The Shenandoah Valley was his home
His Granny raised him up like her very own
They worked hard and they made do
With what they had and what they grew
Poor farmers, they lived the county life
Verse 2: He left the farm soon after Granny died
And for twenty years he worked from nine to five
He saved up every dime
And headed south for the Georgia line
‘Cause he’s a farmer and he missed the country life
Chorus: Country Life, Country Life
Couldn’t live in the city if he tried
Got a heart of gold but he’s tough as an old cowhide
He’s a farmer and he loves the country life
Verse 3: He bought a piece of Cherokee County land
And built a simple home with his own hands
In a hollow in the pines
He has love and he has time
He’s a farmer and he loves the country life
Verse 4: He pulls up and picks up a couple o’ loads
At the hundred-year-old feed store down the road
Just walkin' in that place
Puts a smile on his face
‘Cause he’s a farmer and he loves the country life
Chorus: Country Life, Country Life
Couldn’t live in the city if he tried
Got a heart of gold but he’s tough as an old cowhide
He’s a farmer and he loves the country life
Verse 5: Today he fixed the fence and fed the hogs
Used the tractor hoe to bury the neighbor’s dog
With red clay on his boots
And a stray cow on the loose
He’s a farmer and he loves the country life
Chorus: Country Life, Country Life
Couldn’t live in the city if he tried
Got a heart of gold but he’s tough as an old cowhide
He’s a farmer and he loves the country life
